Shhh! It’s a Secret!

by Lester Young

Well, it’s not exactly that kind of secret…you know, the kind no one’s supposed to know about. No, this secret is one that’s actually at its best when everyone is fully aware of it. You might say it’s a secret that’s no big secret. As a matter of fact, you’ll find it described – openly and for all the world to see – in Psalm 91.

In verse 1, we find that this secret is as much a ‘where’ as it is a ‘what:’ “He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” In other words, he who stays under God’s umbrella will experience God’s divine protection. A comforting thought to be sure; but just what, exactly, is this promised shadow? By doing a little bit of digging we can find the answer. Verse 4 of the Psalm tells us that “[God’s] truth is our shield and buckler;” and Jesus declares, in prayer, that “[God’s] word is truth” (John 17:17). So, God’s words, His promises to us, are our shield and buckler – our very real protection from all harm (Psalm 91:10). (It’s interesting to note, before we move on, that the word ‘buckler’ carries an implication of something that surrounds; such as, for example, a full set of body armor or a force field.)

“You’re saying that God’s ‘words’ can physically protect me in this dangerous, natural world?” Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. If you need a working example of that fact, just look at our Lord Jesus. He walked in that protection all His life here – most dramatically, to be sure, during the three years of His public ministry. The Jewish leaders probably wanted to kill Jesus every time He even came to mind, much less when He had the audacity to actually show up somewhere. And, they gave it their best shot on several occasions. Why, then, didn’t (or couldn’t) they succeed in their efforts?

Jesus clearly explains it: “The Father loves Me because I sacrifice My life so I may take it back again. No one can take My life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded” (John 10:17-18, New Living Translation). Literally, no one could lay a finger on Jesus until He allowed them to, until it was time for Him to go to the cross (Matthew 26:56; Mark 14:49; Luke 22:53).

But, the Lord didn’t just leave us to wish we could have that same kind of protection. He told us exactly how He did it, right there in John 15:10: “If you keep My commandments, you shall abide in My love; even as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love.” Obedience to the words of His Father kept Jesus totally and completely safe. Not the fact that He was the Son of God, not the fact that He was the Messiah, not even the fact that Jesus was the Word incarnate (John 1:14). It was His obedience to the Father’s will that kept Jesus protected and in continued good health. And, by the instructions of that same verse, He told us that we can do the same thing and experience the very same results.

Dwelling in God’s secret place is no more complicated or mysterious than keeping the commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is to “love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12). Walking in love – and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit – will keep you safe. The angels will be at your disposal to bear you up so that you’re never hurt (Psalm 91:11-12). The devil could look right at you and not be able to see you, because you’re under the shadow of God’s wings (Psalm 91:4). And even if he does see you, He won’t be able to do a thing to stop you from destroying a little more of his kingdom wherever you have the audacity to show up (Acts 10:38). Because you dwell in the Secret Place, God’s love – and that’s no secret at all.

  1. Great post, Lester. Psalm 91 is very powerful, and as you state, the key is obedience. I know there are many who do not believe in the supernatural in these modern times, but I am aware of a number of people who have been protected and healed by reciting and believing this psalm every day.

    • Hi Dee…yes, protection is part of our Covenant. Obedience (he who obeys My commands is the one who loves Me – John 14:21) keeps us in God’s perfect Will and, therefore, in His perfect protection. Thanks for stopping by, as always!
