Splendor from Within

by Lester Young

“Consider [carefully] the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil [are wearied in hard work] nor spin [fabric for their own clothing]: And yet I say to you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these” (Matthew 6:28-29).

You know, that’s a very interesting statement the Lord Jesus made there. He actually made the claim that King Solomon, on his most ‘pomp and circumstantial’ day, couldn’t compete in appearance with a field lily – and I don’t mean a field full of lilies. According to Jesus, he couldn’t even hold a candle to one of them!

Let’s just examine that for a moment. One of the richest men who ever lived, with undoubtedly one of the deepest checkbooks the world has ever seen – and he pretty much would have had to, given the fact that he had 700 wives (that’s seven-zero-zero, hundred!); plus another 300 ladies on the side (1 Kings 11:3). Now, please don’t get me wrong, and make no mistake: no one tips his hat to God more than me for making women; for they are an intensely strange and intensely amazing and intensely wondrous and intensely beautiful creation. But a thousand women…under one roof?!? In one bathroom??!? I think the only question I might have for this man would be – “Uh…why?” (And, we thought Johnny Carson needed to be rich…but I digress…)

Actually, I didn’t come here to tell you that. What I really wanted to talk about were the lilies, and how they could possibly outshine all the greatest splendor of Solomon. How could that be? Well, think about it. King Solomon was fitted and arrayed with all his heart’s desire, the absolute best that money could buy. And, without a doubt, that was pretty magnificent. But those flowers – each and every one of them – were born with that divine beauty on the inside of them. An innate beauty, rooted in their natural DNA – a beauty that was not only a part of them, it was their actual destiny to become it. No man-made outer covering or substitute could ever truly compare with such a God-inspired, God-designed, God-ordained ensemble. It didn’t matter what Solomon put on, he couldn’t compete; those flowers were glorified and clothed from the inside out.

Now, fast-forward to today. We have an advantage that even King Solomon didn’t possess. In Christ Jesus, we’ve been blessed with a reborn spirit, a spirit that’s recreated in the image of God Himself. A spirit that not only innately possesses His DNA as our own (the characteristics – or fruits – of His Spirit as listed in Galatians 5:22-23), it’s also one in unison with Him (1 Corinthians 6:17) – and so we’re glorified with His very same glory (John 17:5, 22). We’ve been given the Spirit of the Lord so that we can walk like God, think like God, act like God and talk like God, right here on this earth (Isaiah 55:7-8, 59:21; 1 Corinthians 2:16; 2 Corinthians 6:16; John 5:19; 1 John 4:17). And, when we’re bold enough to do that, we’ll get the same results Jesus got when He did it; that is, the Kingdom of God and of heaven manifesting here, all around us (Luke 4:18, 11:20; John 14:12) – which, by the way, has always been His Master Plan from the beginning (Genesis 1:28).

I seriously doubt that any one of those lilies would be able to explain to us just how it clothes itself so miraculously. But then, it really doesn’t have to know how. What’s been placed inside it simply does what it does because it’s been engineered to do it. In the same manner, our full understanding of just how our spirit will produce what God plans for it to produce in our lives is quite unnecessary (Mark 4:27). As any experienced farmer knows that good seed planted in good ground will grow crops, we simply need to know that God’s sowing-and-reaping system can and will produce – when we believe Him and operate it in Faith, Hope and Love (Mark 4:14-20, 11:22-25; 1 Corinthians 13:13). Once that happens, the splendor from Him that’s already on the inside of us will come forth and put every lily outfit in sight to shame! (Matthew 6:30)

  1. Amen! Everything that is true and beautiful comes from God, and the adornment of a God-given endowment, nothing can surpass. Thank God for the new creation that He has made transformed us into, and the innate potential of that God-kind of life that is operating within us! Dee (p.s. just got back from my trip)

    • Hi Dee…glad you’re back safe and sound. As revelation dawns on us that we really are a totally ‘new creation’ on the inside, it’ll begin to show more and more on the outside – not just with our attitude and physical body, but also with our circumstances and all that pertains to us.

I had a friend when I was in the Air Force who was from Guam. He always used to tell me about how small the island was 🙂

  2. Awesome post God is good all the time.. Have a blessed day.
