A ‘Follower’s’ Reward

by Lester Young

Here’s a question that might spark a little interest: Would you categorize yourself as a ‘leader’ or a ‘follower’? Do you like to ‘take the bull by the horns’ (though I’m not all that sure just how many people would actually follow behind you in doing such a…but I digress), or are you one who prefers to gauge which way the wind’s blowing before stepping out and committing yourself? Okay, okay, yes…it’s a somewhat loaded question.

The fact is, if you’re a human being, you’re a follower. There’s nothing you can do about it; you were made that way. “Wait a minute! I thought God made men to have dominion and gave us a free will!” Yes, that’s true; He certainly did. In fact, Genesis 1:28 tells us exactly what we’ve been given dominion over: “God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” We can expand this thought to mean that we’ve been given dominion “over all of the ‘natural’ creation” (but not, you’ll notice, over other men!). Of course, you know the story: Adam gave that right of dominion over to Satan when he chose to obey his words rather than God’s. (Keep this thought close by; we’ll refer to it again shortly.)

Aside from ‘other human beings,’ there’s another glaring omission in that list of things God gave man dominion over: the spiritual ordinances which cause all of Creation to function as it does. Those ordinances can be completely and succinctly described as ‘His Word.’ God’s Word was before anything else; and everything else (whether spiritual or natural) exists, is held together and operates by His Word (Colossians 1:17). While putting Job in his place God rhetorically asked him, “Do you know the laws of the heavens [the spiritual realm], and can you make them to rule over the earth?” (Job 38:33 New Living Translation, paraphrased) With that query God was declaring to us that the spiritual realm (because His Words, of course, are Spirit [John 6:63]) commands the natural, physical world. Hebrews 11:3 clearly bears this out as well: “By faith we understand that the worlds [plural] were framed (fashioned, put in order, and equipped for their intended purpose) by the Word of God, so that what we see was not made out of things which are visible” (Amplified Bible).

Take Your Inheritance Now!

by Lester Young

Today, let’s talk again about [drum roll…] ‘the prodigal son’ (Luke 15:11-32). No, I’m not picking on that boy; it’s just that there are a whole lot of different things we can learn from that story simply by examining it from different angles.

Now, we pretty much can all agree that this kid had quite a bit of starch in his shorts to even ask his father for his inheritance in the first place…now…while the man was still alive and presumably in good health (verse 12). I mean, what would you imagine the response to be if you went up to your dad and said, “Hey, Pop; you know I love you and everything, but you’re kinda taking too long to die…can I just have right now the stuff your will says I’m going to get?” I would think that after picking himself up from off the floor over a fit of convulsive laughter and/or gingerly removing his hands from around your neck, he’d calmly walk over to your mother and remark, “Gladys, there’s something seriously wrong with your child.”

But notice that this father didn’t do any of those things. We can deduce by the tone of the parable that when presented with such a brazen demand the man didn’t even raise an eyebrow (verse 12). Scripture suggests that he didn’t recoil in a hurt or insulted manner; in fact, he didn’t react any way at all. He just summarily gave the kid (and his other son too, by the way) what was already designated, and that was that. He didn’t rebuke his son’s audacity, not in the least. No “Boy, are you crazy?” No “Just who do you think you are?!” No nothing – not a peep. Keep in mind that the father’s reaction to his son’s shameless request is of paramount importance here.

Be Rest Assured

by Lester Young

Today, I’d like to share with you some beautiful and insightful words from my friend Joseyphina Amoako, a very anointed writer. I know they’ll bless you as they’ve blessed me…

Joseyphina's World

What have I promised you that I haven’t fulfilled?
How many times have I pulled you out of troubled storms and placed you safely on calm shores?
Count your blessings and don’t forget how far I’ve brought you.

Things may tarry but I am never late;
Wait a little while longer and you will see.
For if I am for you, who dare be against you?
And if I’m with you, who and what can stop you?

I, who hold the universe in my hand, am the one looking out for you.
I have not brought you this far to leave you stranded;
Those who know me, know me by My name: I AM
I AM all that you need in this life.
If you have Me, you have Life.

I’ll be at your greatest point of need;
I’ll be your Light on dark paths;
I’ll be your Rest in…
