When You “Don’t Care” to Trust

by Lester Young

“Trust the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5 God’s Word Translation).

Most Christians probably know that verse of Scripture quite well – heard it a thousand times. Throughout the Bible we’re both encouraged and directed to trust the Lord, and we should certainly heed those instructions. But has anyone else besides me noticed that when you get right down to it, placing your total trust in someone – even if that someone is Someone – is not automatically the most “natural” thing in the world to do? And even more so if you can’t see them?

You know, now that I stop to think about it, ‘trust’ is one of those abstract terms that’s difficult to craft a precise definition for. Oh, I think we all have a sense of awareness about it, but actually expressing the meaning in descriptive terminology – without using the word ‘trust’ itself – is not quite as straightforward as you might initially think. Who Are You?

by Lester Young

It’s something we almost exclusively only ask other human beings. But the most important, revealing and truthful answer we can receive from the question “Who are you?” only comes when we ask it to ourselves.

Hollow Accusations

by Lester Young

Have you ever been accused of anything – anything at all? Okay, have you ever been accused of anything – whether you actually did it or not – by somebody whose own reputation is… shall we say, ‘significantly less than stellar’ themselves? Not only does it automatically take some of the bite out of the allegation, it typically also has the effect of just irritating the crap out of you, doesn’t it? You know the attitude that invariably rises up on the inside: “Well just who the %*&# do they think they are, pointing their fat little sausage finger at me, after all the **** they’ve been doing!?” …or something to that effect.

On a somewhat related note, do you know what the name ‘Satan’ means? Being one of the most appropriate and spot-on appellations to be found in the Bible, it literally means “the opponent, the adversary, the accuser“. And that’s exactly what Satan is: the accuser of the brethren. It’s what he does – all day, every day (Revelation 12:10). Or perhaps I should say, “It’s what he did.” Now that’s not to say he no longer accuses, because he can’t help himself: he can’t deny his nature (John 8:44). But we do need to be keenly aware of something very important that’s greatly affected how and where he does it.
