Have you ever been accused of anything – anything at all? Okay, have you ever been accused of anything – whether you actually did it or not – by somebody whose own reputation is… shall we say, ‘significantly less than stellar’ themselves? Not only does it automatically take some of the bite out of the allegation, it typically also has the effect of just irritating the crap out of you, doesn’t it? You know the attitude that invariably rises up on the inside: “Well just who the %*&# do they think they are, pointing their fat little sausage finger at me, after all the **** they’ve been doing!?” …or something to that effect.
On a somewhat related note, do you know what the name ‘Satan’ means? Being one of the most appropriate and spot-on appellations to be found in the Bible, it literally means “the opponent, the adversary, the accuser“. And that’s exactly what Satan is: the accuser of the brethren. It’s what he does – all day, every day (Revelation 12:10). Or perhaps I should say, “It’s what he did.” Now that’s not to say he no longer accuses, because he can’t help himself: he can’t deny his nature (John 8:44).
